The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid operates as a mild hybrid. Instead of fully driving on electricity, it uses a 13-horsepower electric motor integrated into the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to assist the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, improving fuel efficiency and acceleration. 
The system operates seamlessly across a few key functions:
Electric Vehicle (EV) Mode: The electric motor can propel the car strictly on battery power for very short distances at slow speeds (usually under 25 mph) or during smooth coasting. It cannot initiate movement from a dead stop. 
Motor Assist: During acceleration, the electric motor provides an immediate boost of torque, helping the gas engine get the car moving more efficiently and responsively. 
Auto Start-Stop: To save fuel, the gas engine automatically shuts off when the vehicle comes to a complete stop.
Regenerative Braking: When you release the accelerator or apply the brakes, the electric motor acts as a generator. It captures otherwise lost kinetic energy and routes it back to the battery pack.
Battery Power: The hybrid uses a compact 0.6 kWh nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery located under the cargo area floor.
